Well it was all going so well. Mike and I ventured out to the grocery store last night with both girls. It was actually an enjoyable experience. Well as enjoyable as grocery shopping can be. Maya slept through the entire endeavour and Abby was reasonably well behaved. We had gone to the grocery store at the mall because we needed to get our water jugs filled at the water depot. We get our water cooler jugs refilled there for $3 with no deposit. We also had to return a Dora puzzle Abby got as a "big sister gift" from my Aunt. She traded it for a Princess puzzle which she's already built a bazillion times since last night. By a stroke of luck we managed to get a parking spot right in front of the grocery store. It was, literally, the closest spot to the front doors. Mike couldn't believe his good fortune. It was such a great spot we actually had a guy waiting for it while we loaded up to go home. Now getting groceries loaded in the back of the van and two kids into carseats is not something you can do quickly. Still this guy waited. And waited. And waited. For the amount of time he spent waiting for us to vacate our primo parking spot he could have parked in the vacant spot located a mere 4 cars to the right and been in the mall. Isn't that a depressing commentary on society?
Bouyed by our positive experience the night before today we attempted shopping at Wal Mart. I am happy to report it followed the same pattern. Maya slept and Abby behaved. Here I was all excited thinking that maybe, just maybe, we were starting to get a handle on having two kids and then we pushed our luck. We had plans to have dinner at Grandma Sandi's. It was a belated birthday dinner for Mike. Family dinner, should be a piece of cake right? Wrong. Everything started out nice enough. Maya had eaten just before we left and she slept contentedly in her car seat. Abby played with the toys. Dinner passed without incident. Then as we sat down to play some poker all hell broke loose. Abby started behaving like a monkey let loose from the zoo. The only thing that kept her from swinging from the chandelier was the fact that we were all sitting under it. Maya was awake and had decided to begin screaming endlessly. I dragged both kids off to the spare room with me in hopes of calming at least one of them down. Mike followed us a moment later and we decided to just cut our losses and head for home. Once in the van Maya continued to scream while Abby demanded her Daddy "go faster". She actually does that often and doesn't like to take no for an answer. Thankfully after a couple of minutes they were both asleep. Maya picked up where she left off, beginning to cry again as soon as we got in the house. I am happy to report 30 minutes later she pooped and she's been one happy baby ever since. She's still awake at almost midnight, but I'll take awake and content at anytime of the day over awake and screaming.
So it was easier to go grocery shopping than it was to have a family dinner at home. We left before we even got to have Mike's birthday cake. Sandi offered to send some home with us, but Mike and I didn't feel the situation could or should be dragged out any further.
Well Miss Maya is beginning to fuss again. Hopefully indicating that she'd like to go to sleep for the evening because Mommy certainly would. Especially since Michael has promised to attend to her tonight. I think the vein bulging out of my head after tonight's antic frightened him.
