happy happy day

So it seems like it was the International Day of Happiness this past weekend and y'all know I like to celebrate as many fake holidays as I can, so it seems like the perfect time to list those little things that make my life happy. I mean it goes without saying that Michael and those girls of ours are dead centre of the things that make me happiest, but what about the zillion little things?

Things like.....

Coffee dates with Auntie KK.
Oh and double date night with Auntie KK.
Lazy summer wine and cheese nights with JB.
Evenings spent with friends playing cards.
Board games.
A really good burger.
Netflix.
Running.
Sharing a good book.
Volunteer projects.
Jammies.
Iced coffee.
Green tea.
Hot coffee.
Cheese.
KitKats.

What makes you happy?

we're streaming

Have you heard the exciting news? That we recently had our bandwidth cap raised from an archaic 20 gigs, to a more reasonable 100 gigs? It's like we won the internet lottery! Of course the first thing we had to do was sign up for Netflix! So exciting to finally be one of the cool kids! It's kind of a lot of pressure though, what should I watch first. There is so much to get caught up on. Things you unlimited internet users take for granted. So after much thought and consideration I started thusly....

1. Suits! Because of course I did. That whole show could just be Harvey Spector walking around in those suits and I would be happy.... but not really because my true love is actually Donna!

2. Once Upon a Time. Pre-Netflix we'd borrow seasons of shows from the library, but if the show was popular then the wait list was long and by the time you got your hands on the next season there had likely been some sort of spoiler alert breakdown because your jerky friends assumed you'd already seen that episode. The girls and I are actually watching this together. I love that we can start an episode at our leisure. Another library issue, you need to wrap up a whole season in a week or prepare to be fined 25 cents per day it's late.

3. The Battered Bastards of Baseball. Mike is a bit of a documentary junkie. Don't get me wrong I love a good documentary too and this one about an incredibly interesting baseball team hits all the right notes.

4. House of Cards. Getting caught up on season three. Oh boy do I love Kevin Spacey even though he scares the life out of me.

5. Derek! Oh my, I don't think I made it through an episode without weeping. What an incredibly sweet series. What an incredibly sweet portrayal of Derek, by Ricky Gervais. Loved it!

What are your NetFlix favourites?

randomly

I liked my sister-in-law's status today because she's cute and funny and I generally like what she has to say. This time there was work attached to my like.... which is a good life lesson for all you kids out there.... always read the fine print!! So the deal is she gives me a number and then I have to tell all of you six random facts about myself, which is kinda hard because I'm not all that interesting plus I've been telling you almost everything here for the past six years or so. There's probably not much I have left to say, but I'll give it a go...

1. I cannot. Cannot. Stand the feel of a wet sweater coming out of the washing machine. Ugh, just typing that gave me a hardcore case of the willies. I can't even think about it.

2. I have the same thing for breakfast every day unless we have plans for brunch or we're out of eggs, english muffins and/or cheese.

3. I covet a FitBit One very very much. Hope Santa is listening.

4. Folger's coffee gives me crazy heartburn.

5. My brother and I watch Survivor together every week via text message. Unless he ditches me for the World's Cutest Nephew.

6.  I cannot sleep with my socks on.

sms

Well it's happening... I can't stop it. I feel like I'm standing on the high diving board with my toes over the edge and the water.... well it's really really really far down there.

In a handful of months Abby will be turning eleven. She's growing up and it makes me nervous. It also has me figuring out this motherhood thing all over again. I've never been the Mom to a tween before, but I have been a tween girl, so at least I have some outdated experience. This past week we let her download a texting app for her ipod and she's signed for a social media type account (not facebook).

So far she's only been texting with family, but I realize that will not last for long. She's so excited that she can actually text people that she shows me everyone she sends and receives, but again I realize that won't last for long either. I'm keeping an eye on the social media account, what she's posting, what people are posting to her. Trying to find that balance. How to be present, but not muddy the waters too much for her. So far it's been fun, she and her little friends are adorable in that "oh look they're growing up" kind of a way, but I worry. I worry about bullying and peer pressure and how do I manage to raise them to successfully navigate all of that?

parenting with beads

So I had heard of this a couple of times on the internet and was intrigued and then my friend, the Widney Woman wrote about it on her blog and I knew I had to give it a try.

Parenting by beads.

I realize there are a lot of opinions on chore lists, sticker charts, reward systems, allowance and such. My deal is.... who gotta figure out what works best in your family, for your kids. That's what I'm trying to do.

We have a real imbalance in our house that is quickly becoming a large problem. You see Abby is pretty great when it comes to lending a hand around the house. Maya is decidedly not so. With relatively little grumbling Abby will get up and help clear the table or put her laundry away or whatever. Maya will fling herself on the couch and dramatically declare that she couldn't possibly help because she'd just sprained her head. Yes, that is an actual excuse she used one night.

What happens is Abby ends up doing more than her fair share of the work and Mike and I both tend to ask her to help with things because she puts up less fuss about it. That, in a word, is not fair. It's not fair and yet it continues. I find it incredibly frustrating, my patience has become paper thin and I am spending far too much time angry and all the things that go along with angry like yelling (me) and crying (Maya). I dread those "get things done" hours between dinner and bed.

So when I read about this system I thought it was worth a shot. I knew Abby would be racking up the beads much quicker than Maya and perhaps that was just the visualization she needed.

We've been operating under the new bead system for 24 hours and I already like what I see. As predicted, Abby is already out in the lead, but only by one bead. Just that one bead is driving Maya nuts. Their toyroom was getting a bit out of control so I sent them in to clean it and let them know that the job paid two beads, if they both did the work they would split it, but if one ended up doing more than the other that person got both. The room was clean in record time with Maya actually helping out. It's too early to call this a huge success, but so far things are a lot quieter here. There is less yelling and more co-operation from our littlest member.

sign of the times

Tonight, my girls who are four and almost eight years old, by the way, spent tonight texting each other. Yes, I said texting each other. Oh and it gets even better. They were sitting about 10 feet apart at the time.

Maya was in the kitchen with Granny and she wanted to send a message to Daddy. So Granny helped her text ~ Hi Daddy ~ to Mike's phone and that was all very exciting. So much so that Abby wanted to get in on the fun. So she's sitting in the living room with Mike's phone texting very important stuff like ~ You smell! ~ back to Maya. And lather, rinse, repeat for the next 30 minutes.

Thank goodness for unlimited texting plans.

it's a throwdown - laundry

So last week The Mommy Project offered up a laundry throwdown. Which was timely because I had been dealing with a broken washing machine that required babysitting so it wouldn't flood the first floor of my house and I had lost my mojo. We were quite literally drowning in dirty clothes. So once the washer was fixed I started throwing things in and ended up with this......

010001

Yes that is a mountain of clean laundry on my coffee table and another mountain on my couch. Luckily Michael Clayton (great movie btw) and I managed to get it looking like this.....

010002

I feel I must tell you that the stack of towels actually starts on the floor! And yes I did put every single bit of it away. Okay, not all of it. The girls can put away their own stuff. Of course with Maya it's a little bit of hide and seek when she's done. Which drawer did she put her shirts in this time? But really that seems a small price to pay not to have to put every single item that gets washed in this house away by myself.

And now I get to do it all again this weekend. Man, do I love laundry.... not!

And hey why not join us for this week's showdown..... backing up all those precious photos you're storing on your computer! You have until next Thursday friends!

today is the day

DelurkerDay2010-702429

Yes, I realize that delurking day was actually on the 14th, but what the heck.... I think we can extend it through the weekend at least here at the Blogmother's. In my bloggy life I have amassed a few friendly followers, lovely folks that can be counted on to comment here and on facebook. Holla! to my ladies and a few gents. Thanks so much to all y'all for taking an interest in what I have to say here. I have been continually surprised at the response and feedback I've gotten from my little patch of the interwebs. You guys are truly rockstars.

Here's the deal though, for the comments that I do get, there are many more folks that just pass through with out a peep. Most are popping by for my taco salad recipe and recipes in general, but the taco salad...... that my top search nearly every month. Weird, huh?

So why not speak up today, all my silent visitors? What have you got to lose? I'll even give you a topic... since I'm heading off to decorate MyPie's birthday cake when I'm finished here.....

Which do you prefer - cake or cupcakes?

And this isn't limited to the newbies, the old guard can feel free to weigh in on this too. Thanks guys, for making blogging so awesome!!

what i love

Thanks to Dani for another great posting idea..... the five things I am loving about this Christmas.

Christmas Eve service. I really do enjoy service on Christmas Eve. It's always filled will my favourite thing...... Christmas carols. Hearing a bunch of people singing together is so beautiful. The service got off to a bit of a rocky start, but that was largely to do with Maya's mood. It was not her best one, but since she has the chicken pox, I'm trying to cut her some slack. Yep, despite the vaccination she's still managed to catch a mild case of the pox. It amounts to about a dozen spots, mostly on her face and has put her in the most foul mood for the past few days. They are starting to fade now, so here's hoping the mood thing turns a corner.

That we have simplified and scaled back. This Christmas season (so far) has been one of the most stress free ones we've celebrated. The shopping happened with ease and without the use of credit. I am excited and happy about the gifts we have to share with our friends and family.

That I had the chance to be off and help out at Abby's Christmas lunch at school. It was such a treat. I promise a full post and crappy video of Abby playing the heck outta her uke very soon.

That Abby still believes. She's going to be 8 in 6 months. I know we can't ride the Santa train for much longer.

That I get to share this Christmas and every day with my Michael and our beautiful girls.

Merry Christmas all!

hourly photo

Andrea over at peek inside the fishbowl had a great idea - an hourly photo project. Since I had to work today, I wasn't planning on participating, but then I got home and said what the heck. I can snap one picture per hour until I drag myself up to bed. So enjoy my hourly photo project, the mini version.

5pm - heart to heart with Abby in our bedroom. Life lessons, ugh.

5pm

6pm - organizing to troops, tidy up time in the toy room.

6pm

7pm - TV break, Fairly Odd Parents I think.

7pm

8pm - Granny's here for her sleepover and she brought her singing bowl (which is very cool) and treasures from her trip to the East Coast.

8pm

9pm - Kids are in bed, time for tea.

9pm

10pm - Triple D time on the FoodNetwork.

10pm

11pm - Input a few more pages of data, before bed.

just a little bit left you didn't know

So it's been making the rounds on facebook, the 25 things about me list, and I've been tagged multiple times, but I've already told you 100 things about me. And then I told you a 100 more. What's left to know?

Well.....

Twenty-five more things apparently.

1. While I truly love to knit, I really don't enjoy being a pattern knitter. I could happily knit scarves (to donate) for the rest of my life.

2. I am starting to be more creative in the kitchen. I spend a lot of my online time reading blogs and learning about new baking/decorating techniques. I'd really like to improve my skills in this area. People in my life should be prepared for samples!

3. My favourite thing to drink is water, with lots of ice and a straw.

4. I've only recently started watching Sex and the City. Talk about late to the party huh?

5. HBO Canada is my new favourite channel. Flight of the Conchords and East Bound and Down are my new favourite shows.

6. I watch Diners, Drive Ins and Dives every chance I get. It makes me want to open a diner.

7. I rarely go shopping, but this morning I spent with my Mom wandering around Michaels, Zellers and Costco. It was a real treat.

8. I would love to purchase 95% of the baking aisle at Michaels.

9. If I ever get on Survivor I'm layering for the flight over. I'm talking three pairs of socks, three pairs of undies, two pairs of shorts, leggings, yoga pants, bra, two tank tops two t- shirts and a long sleeved tee and a sweatshirt. I'm not going to end up wearing stilettos and a business suit for 39 days in the jungle. Not this girl. I want options.

10. I have watched every episode of every season of Survivor.

11. Despite an elaborate clothing strategy plan, I have zero interest in actually being on the show.

12. The girls and I often have jammie days.

13. We have more jammie days in the winter than we do in the summer.

14. While our little pool is great and worth every penny we've spent on it, I would love to have an actual pool. One that's more that 30 inches deep.

15. I still laugh at the Cowbell sketch from SNL like it's the first time I've seen it.

16. Everything seems funnier to me if Mike's laughing with me.

17. I love all kinds of chocolate, but there's nothing quite as good as lindor.

18. I prefer milk chocolate chips to semi-sweet.

19. I have completely switched to green tea, no more orange pekoe for me.

20. I prefer deep dark coloured nail polish for my toes. Colours like black, brown, burgandy or blue. Never red.

21. With the kids and then myself being sick the past week I've had almost no online time. I missed blogging. The writing, the reading and the commenting.

22. I love my crocs, both the flipflop and the original style.

23. I wish I could let go and be more outgoing.

24. I do not understand the appeal of a thong.

25. It's true. I enjoy webkinz world and often play when Abby is in bed.

Okay... you may know everything now -- I can't imagine I have any secrets left.

updating you on wii

Well it's been a week of Wii boxing and I am still enjoying myself immensely. Although I didn't make it everyday this past week. Maya had ordered a 2:30 am wake up call for Friday morning. Apparently that was prime time for her and I to hang out. Needless to say by 6:00 I was passed out on the couch.

020008

Here is my meteoric climb up the ranks of Wii boxing. Notice my pint sized cheerleaders. Usually when I box they sit ringside (aka the couch) and cheer me on. Although something seems not so right about Maya sitting and shouting at me to "Get him Mommy!" So it's been a steady climb for me as I knock out virtual opponent after virtual opponent. And then I came across Max. Max is a killer! It's not very often I even manage to land a punch on him. He annilihates me in no time. I have managed to knock him out once and I was so excited about it until the Wii boxing commission wanted me to fight him again. Of course even if I manage to get through two fights with him and win, what do I think is going to happen? That they'll give me someone easier to fight? I'm not thinking so!

I wish I could tell you if there's been a loss of any kind, but I am currently without a scale. Which is fine. I'll clear that problem up when I purchase a Wii Fit. One of these days. In other exciting news I may just have a walking buddy. Well currently I have an offer from a friend. I'll let you know if it actually pans out. (See you Friday ML?)

And finally today is delurking day! So come on out of the wood work and say hello.

again with the twilight

So yeah, I have it. Twilight mania. I just finished the series. The fourth one was my favourite, just in case you were out there wondering. And I already want to read them again. Seriously! It's weird. I am so not a 14 year old girl and yet here I am acting like one. Just as I predicted Courtney and I discussed the book at length this weekend when Robin and the crew were over. The fourth book was also her favourite and she's re-reading it for the elventy billionth time. I just don't get it. Is there cocaine on the pages? What makes it so appealing? I mean I read it and I don't get it. I haven't been this invested in characters in a book since my preteen obsession with the Sweet Valley High Series. Oddly enough the Sweet Valley series was criticized for a plot line that had one of the twins falling in love with a vampire and another one that had both of them battling a werewolf.

I haven't seen the movie yet and probably won't until it comes out on dvd because Mike will not go see it with me and Robin's already seen it and that would be it for my list of potential dates. Well I guess I could talk Grandma Linda into going, but she hasn't read the book yet. And it's only speculation at this point that she'd even want to read the book. Even though she does because we're pretty much book soul mates. Whatever she reads I read and vice versa.

All this to say I was damn excited when I popped over to my buddy Julie's blog and saw she had taken a Twilight quiz. What choice did I have, but to take it and find out that...

I'm a Esme! I found out through TwilightersAnonymous.com. Which Twilight Female Are You? Take the quiz and find out!
Take the Quiz and Share Your Results!

You are thoughtful and care very deeply for your family. A loving home is of great
importance to you and you always try to make people feel welcome. Although you have a great capacity to love, you also have a great capacity to hurt, so at times you can be
sensitive. You're firm when you need to be, but people trust your judgment and
appreciate the kind way you always handle things.

Oh my gosh that is so me! Truly!

And which Twilight heroine are you?

Thanks to Twilighters Anonymous for the great quiz!

Granny arrived for a visit tonight with what might be the greatest gift Abby's ever received.

November:
As much as I was looking forward Halloween this year I did not have high hopes for the actual day.

December:
Well it looks like Abby is over her latest bout with the stomach bug.

traditions

Tis the season for Christmas memes. Thanks to Dani for this one.

1. Christmas Eve or Christmas morning?

This year we're spending Christmas Eve with Papa and Grandma Linda, so yes. And the girls will have their new jammers from Santa to open when we get home.

2. Donner or Donder?

I wasn't even aware there was an option. He's always been Donner to me.

3. Turkey or ham?

Almost always turkey. My Grandma K would always have turkey and ham. There was a lot of mouths to feed at those dinners. This year I'm thinking roast beef on Boxing Day.

4. Gifts opened all at once, or one at a time?

One at a time, definitely. Why rush a good thing?

5. Christmas tree: live or artificial?

Both actually. I have a fake one beside my desk here, but the real one is the show stopper in the living room.

6. Cards: boxed cards, family photo cards, or e-cards?

Boxed cards. I used to send out a ton, but this year it dwindled right down to a handful. And most of them are hand delivered.

7. Christmas lights: incandescent or LED?

I have both. The LED's are awesome for the environment, but they just don't throw the same kind of warm light like the old school ones do. I have LED's on one tree and incandescent on the other.

8. Re-gift or not?

If I have the opportunity to, sure. And I rarely have the opportunity. The gift givers in my family have terrific taste.

9. Gift wrap or gift bags?

Gift bags just don't quite cut it for Christmas.

10. Best Christmas song?

Abby and Grandma Linda were incredible singing Away in the Manger today.

11. Best Christmas movie?

Polar Express, Elf, Christmas Vacation and the Grinch.

12. Favourite family tradition?

I don't think I could pick just one. The kids are having a blast with Elwood though!

Okay, your turn. Do play along!!
