The Best Things in Life Are Free

That's how the saying goes and I have to agree. Having Maya smile at me so sweetly when we're up together in the middle of the night. Watching as Abby tackles a new skill, makes a new friend or all of the sudden acts so grown up. What could be better than that? Nothing that I can think of. Building memories is another great freebie. Even better is revisiting memories of your childhood with your kids like I did with Abby yesterday.

After about a week of nice sunny days yesterday was rainy and miserable all day long. It was still nice and balmly, but even that seemed like small consolation since we spent the day inside. Abby had actually been over night to Grandma Sandi's and wasn't home until dinner time. When she got home she crashed hard and slept a couple of hours on the couch. After that of course she was energized and ready to go, but letting her out in the yard to blow off steam wasn't really an option, what with the rain and thunderstorm and all. So while Mike cleaned up the kitchen Abby and I revisited a piece of my childhood.

We made a fort in the living room with a blanket, the coffee table and the cushions off the love seat. It's been a good 25 years since I made one of those so it was far from my greatest work. Dave and I used to make pretty elaborate ones when we were kids. We'd have all the cushions off the couch, every blanket in the house, chairs from the kitchen, all the encyclopedias off the shelf to use as weights and clothes pegs to hold the seams together, this in comparison was a very basic model. Abby, however, was very impressed and climbed right in with her pillow and blanket. The fort was right in front of the TV so she laid there and watched Robots. It was on the dish yesterday so I taped it for her. I'm glad I had taped in instead of buying it for her since she really wasn't all that interested in it. The animation is pretty busy with dull muted colours, not like your traditional animated movie from Disney. I think the story was a bit above her as well. But the fort was a huge hit and that was the important part.

Like I said, it's not much for looks, but it was big enough for Abby.

And Maya too.

Now the fort wasn't exactly a stable design so it did eventually collapse, it was unfortunate that the My Little Ponies were trapped inside at the time. Abby staged an elaborate rescue mission and I'm happy to report all parties were brought out safely. Once the fort had been dispatched with Abby had to find something else to occupy her time and she did with my basket full of clothes pegs. Yep she has literally hundreds and hundreds of dollars worth of toys in her play room and she was content to amuse herself with my clothes pegs that I buy 30 for a dollar at Dollarama. This has actually been one of her favourite "toys" for a while now. Sometimes she clips them on all five fingers and tells me it's her "Batman Clippers". Last night she clipped them all over her shirt to make a dress. She refused to let me take a picture of it though. You know those designers can be so touchy. I guess we'll all have to wait until she launches these dresses at her spring fashion show. Just lately she's been doing this......

Yep, that's clothes pegs stuck to her lips. She's being a duck and she claims that it doesn't hurt. Believe me I ask her constantly. So on the off chance post secondary education doesn't work out for her I can see she has a career in the Jim Rose Circus Sideshow waitng for her.

And I close with a picture of Miss Maya.....
