Tonight at the church hall we gathered up the family to celebrate Maya's first birthday. Somehow we managed to make it a quiet low key affair despite having over 20 guests. What can I say, we're popular people.
Since Maya is still too young to request what kind of cake she'd like for her birthday Abby and I picked one for her. A snowman, which a week ago, with the unseasonably warm weather we were having, seemed a funny choice. Luckily we had some snow show up just in time. Now I don't want to brag, but I think this may be my finest cake to date.
Maya was definitely happy with it. You know she may be attempting to shove the entire piece of cake in her mouth, but I have to say she was surprisingly neat about it. There was much less clean up than there was the night before.
The chocolate fountain was a huge hit. I was surprised how easy it was to get going. Although we did learn that it has to be perfectly level for the chocolate to flow evenly out of all sides. Thanks to Papa Mark, Uncle Jeff and about $18 in change we managed to achieve the desired 'levelness'. Also extremely easy, the clean up afterwards. So thanks
This may sound odd, but one of the nicest things about Maya's birthday has been Abby. She has been nothing less than excited about her sister's birthday. She hasn't shown a bit of jealousy, not even when Maya was getting her presents. Thursday night as I tucked her in Abby said to me in her most excited voice, "Mom, there's only one more sleep until Maya's birthday! I can't wait until the morning!" Abby has worked very hard to make Maya's birthday special. From baking her a mini cake Friday night to sending her Dad to the dollar store for party hats, balloons and noise makers. Today at the hall she happily helped set tables and decorated each one with the above mentioned party hats, noisemakers and balloons. It warms my heart to see what a kind and giving little girl she has become.
