The other night Abby asked me to play video games with her. You may remember that Santa brought her the V-tech V.Smile video game system for Christmas. I have to interrupt myself to tell you I love this system. It might be a video game, but it is packed full of learning. Now the system came with one game and Abby got two others for Christmas. The game she plays the most is the Dora game and this is for a couple of reasons. One being she's a freak for Dora. Another being the Dora game is listed in the 3 to 5 year old age group. The game that came with the system and the Scooby Doo game are in the 4 to 7 year old age group. Now Abby's never really played video games before so her eye hand coordination is not the best. The Dora game doesn't allow her to make mistakes in that it won't allow Dora to miss a jump or walk off the edge of the screen. This makes play for Abby much more enjoyable and she plays longer which means she's learning more. Win-win all around.
For some strange reason the other night she wanted to play Alphabet Adventure, a game which is, wait for it, all about the alphabet; putting letters in sequence, filling in the missing letter, matching words to pictures and so on. All things she is currently doing at school. As we played I could sense Abby was getting frustrated at her inability to control her "man". After missing yet another jump she slapped a hand against her leg and;
Abby: Damn it!
Me: What did you say?
She turned to look at me, eyes wide and the picture of absolute innocence.
Abby: I said whoops.
Me: Okay, now you're not even trying.
