the busy house, that's us

My neighbours have been known to describe our house as the busy place. The house where cars come and go. Where there always seems to be company, cars spilling out of our driveway. It's a fair assessment we do entertain a lot. It doesn't seem that way to me, because this is how I've always lived. When I was a kid my parents were popular folks and as such had a busy social life, a lot of which came right to their back door. I have distinct memories of being with my Dad out in the backyard while he "shot the shit" in the driveway with a racing buddy, a pal from work, a neighbour from down the street or even one of my own Uncles.

Now entertaining for us has a lot of different meanings. It may be small; coffee with Papa and Grandma Linda in the evening. Or large; full out barbecues with all our friends. And the whole gambit in between. I never think of our house as overly busy, but a quick look back at the last week had us hosting two birthday parties, two swim dates, one coffee date and one pop in from my Mom, funnily enough while we were out at a movie so she visited with the babysitting Auntie Yoli instead. I'm sure that may seem excessive to some, but it's just the way we like it. There's nothing I like more than sharing food, laughs and my home with family and friends and tonight was no exception.

Tonight we had a little barbecue in honour of Grandma Linda's birthday. Dinner was excellent if I do say so myself. I made some very tasty hamburgers which will very likely turn up on a What's Cooking Wednesday in the not too distant future. We had a little family swim time, pool was a beautiful 84 degrees which believe it or not still isn't warm enough for Grandma Linda. Although she did suck it up and slowly eased her way in. Not surprisingly, the kids had no such hang ups about the temperature.

So we swam and we coloured and we ate and we drank and we were merry.

In short it was a perfect evening.

hey shan! that sounds like so much fun. you reminded me of my dad so much. he was a social butterfly...it was completely impossible to go *anywhere* with him and not have someone yell his name. & that expression "shoot the shit"...i haven't heard that since i was living at home. whenever mom asked dad where he had been, he would always say "i was out with so & so shooting the shit!"

ps. Happy birthday to Grandma Linda!!

Hey my neighbours definitely think we're crazy. I get a lot of "better you than me" kind of comments. I seem to have surrounded myself with very social people. Mike's Dad is the same way and so is Mike. We were in Florida on holidays years ago which I'm sure you can imagine is a hell of a long way from Canada and Mike ran into somebody he knew.

I haven't heard that expression in a long time either. It just popped back into my mind while I was writing this. Dad was a huge fan of "shooting the shit"!

Sounds like you are having a fun summer! I'm amazed that we've been hosting a lot more people over than normal considering the new baby & the fact that our backyard is a big pile o'dirt. It's always fun to have people over, though b/c if you don't it's easy to lose touch with people who live just around the corner.

I also had to post and say "Wow, Maya is growing up!" I noticed in the pictures today that she has grown up so much just since I've started reading your blog. It is true that they grow up way too fast!

Thanks Merry, it has been a great summer.

That picture of Maya in the towel makes her look so grown up it's crazy.

Thanks Laurel. My Mom just switched jobs and is now working at the Children's Place. So you can imagine what that means. Lots of beautiful clothes for the girls. They also have little shrugs for these so they can wear them into the fall. Way too cute.
