she has some quirks

At Abby's school they request purchases towards the school literacy program in lieu of teacher's gifts at Christmas time. It's a great idea seeing as we are the lowest funded school in our district, but it's not much fun for the kids. About a month or so ago we were at a craft sale and Abby was entranced by a pretty Christmas decoration. She asked if we could please buy it for her teacher for Christmas. That it was the perfect gift. Turns out it was the perfect gift as the ornament had some personal significance to Miss AbbysTeacher. Needless to say she was pleased with her gift and with Abby's thoughtfulness. I don't think donating to the literacy program would of had the same touch.

Now don't get me wrong I think donating to the literacy program is great, but this year we decided to donate something that would benefit the kids on a broader scale. With Granny's help, today Mike and I took a large selection of craft supplies to Abby's class. Miss AbbysTeacher was happy to receive our donation even if we did show up at a somewhat hectic time. You try getting 20 plus kids into snowsuits etc and out the door on time. The woman deserves a medal.

Now as pleased as Abby's teacher was to see us, Abby was decidedly less so. She was quite near tears when she saw we had arrived, but trying to put on a brave face. Her teacher was a little stunned since this was out of character behaviour for Abby and to be honest I didn't get what the problem was either. As it turns out she was upset about not getting to ride the school bus home. How is that? I said to Mike any other kid in school would love if their parents surprised them with a ride home, not ours. Oh no she wants to ride the school bus. So we let her, it didn't make any difference in the end. We'd had to come to the school to drop off the donation and we had to go back to the sitters to pick up Maya. But it gets even better as Mike and I walked across the parking lot after leaving Abby in line for her bus she began to holler for him to come back. So, obviously, I was thinking she'd changed her mind. Oh no. She just wanted him to bring back her back pack. Mike didn't think she needed to take it on the bus as well, but apparently he was wrong there. So despite the fact that we showed up to give her a ride home from school Abby still ended up on the bus with her back pack on and her rather large art project in hand. Funny thing, she got off the bus all excited to see us like a regular day at school even though she'd just seen us 20 minutes before. A little bit of a creature of habit I'm thinking.

What a cute story - especially wanting to have her backpack and all - so funny! She does sound like a creature of habit, but darling as well. See you soon, Shan.

Bless your heart for letting her be herself and loving her just as she is. And bless you for bing so practical with your
christmas gifting.

I bet the independence of riding the bus and being responsible for her things makes Abby feel very grown up!

You'll just have to remind her of this blog entry when she's a teenager and the bus becomes "so uncool."

I think you picked a better gift- who wants to be told how and what to gift? Doesn't that defeat the purpose? Just donate books from your own collection to the literacy program as your girls grow out of them.

Kellan - thanks, she's a funny girl.

Roxie - aww thanks, you're making me blush.

Sass - I think you're very likely right.

Kelly - donating to the literacy program is merely a suggestion by the school.
