what's cooking wednesday - grilled asparagus

Barbecue season is upon us and we do our best to take full advantage of it, cooking outside as often as we can. I feel kind of embarrassed even calling this a recipe, it's so easy. Mike's not a huge fan of the vegetables, so it seems odd to me that he likes asparagus so much, but he does and I'm thankful for it. For some reason this is the only way we eat it. I'm not sure why. I'm not even sure he likes it done any other way. I only ever buy it in the warmer months.

Grilled Asparagus

1 bunch of asparagus washed and trimmed
drizzle of olive oil
1/2 tsp (or so) garlic powder
2 tbsp grated (or so) Parmesan cheese

Toss the asparagus with the olive oil, garlic powder and parmesan cheese. Place in a barbecue wok over medium heat on the barbecue. Stir occasionally and grill to desired doneness.

Recipe Notes: See, what did I tell you? Easy peasy lemon squeezy. This went along great as part of my favourite Sunday night barbecued dinner, beer can chicken (with grub rub), corn bread, baked potato and the grilled asparagus. Sounds delicious, no? My girls wouldn't touch a bit of it. I am so hoping this is a phase they are going through because it really sucks. Anyway, you can see by the picture that my asparagus is a little more done than one would probably like. What can I say? I have two little kids and sometimes the asparagus has to take a back seat.

What is What's Cooking Wednesday and how can I play?

What's cooking Wednesday was born out of a desire to get out of that what's for dinner rut. Playing is easy, on Wednesday post a recipe that has been tried and tested by you and then pop over here and add your name to the Mr. Linky. When entering your name also add the name of the recipe in brackets and make sure you link to your What's Cooking Wednesday post and not just your blog's front page. And don't forget to link back here, the home of What's Cooking Wednesday.

So for example I would write Shan (Speedy Chicken Stir Fry) in the name section. For the URL section I would post this: http://shanrev.blogspot.com/2007/10/whats-cooking-wednesday-speedy-chicken.html

I'll let you in on a little secret. Much to Kaffy's chagrin, my WCW recipes are almost never made on a Wednesday. So feel free to cook and photograph whenever you have time and join us posting on Wednesday.

Oh, Shan, this is so funny! I did asparagus, too! I've got a bunch of asparagus things, though, as part of a farmers market series I'm doing. Your pic and recipe look wonderful!

This is so great to see asparagus on the menu again! It's so expensive (and not so good) out of season. We need to make some up now. :) Your dinner looks fabulous.

We LOVE grilled asparagus and eat it all the time in the spring and summer. So good.

The tips are often burned here too.

I fry fresh asparagus:
Snap it at the snappy place
Cut it into 1 inch pieces
Wash it really well
Fry it in extra-virgin olive oil until it starts to brown up a bit

This is the only way my husband will eat asparagus at all, and the only way the kids will eat it without complaining (I make them eat the canned stuff too, but have no pull over hubby that way!).

I'm going to have to try it your way before the asparagus crop is over!
