drive in

We finally wrapped up Maya's birthday festivities this past weekend with a drive-in movie birthday party.

This is a killer idea and I so wish that I could take credit for it, but I have seen it here and there around the internet. I gathered up some boxes and luckily I could get my hands on some that had no printing on the outside of them. Mike cut some tires and headlights out of construction paper and I added a pillow for comfort. Then we waited for the kids to show up.

Once they did Abby handed out crayons and they got to work decorating their cars however they wanted. We had three little girls and one little guy and they all had fun with this part.

Before the party, Abby made movie tickets and "Maya Money". After the cars were suitably decorated we moved the kids onto the "snack bar" where they got to use their "Maya Money" to purchase lunch, movie snacks, drinks and their ticket. We settled them into their cars and pressed play. My friend asked how long the kids sat in the cars and she was surprised to hear they were in them for the whole movie, barring bathroom breaks and drink top ups. Once they had finished with their lunch etc we handed out their goodie bags that had hardcover notebooks (but clipboards would work too) that I had clipped four or five Rio (the movie of choice) colouring pages to.

As I mentioned we had four kids here, including Maya. Well, six counting Abby and her friend who were hanging in the toy room. And that was really the perfect size for Maya. Smaller is better with her. I had made chocolate cupcakes with peanut butter frosting and Mike had the best idea. You know how all the kids want to blow out the birthday candles? Mike gave each kid a cupcake with their very own candle in it, so after happy birthday all the kids made a wish and blew out their candles. Smart, huh?

By the time we wrapped everything upthere was 30 minutes left in the party and the kids ran out the clock playing in their cars. They were trains all joined together for a bit and then they turned into boats. It was a hit with our 4-7 year olds both the girls and the boy. Best part it was relatively easy and inexpensive to put together. I scored some major cool Mom points with that one.
