A Bit of This and That

Well the taxes are done! It was a good news/bad news situation. Mike's getting a refund, but I have to pay. Factor in what we paid to have our taxes done and we broke even this year. So all in all I think we did okay. I was worried about the taxes this year, only because last year was the first year I had done all the book keeping for the business. The accountant tells me I did a good job. I was very happy to hear that.

The Revills are getting a new vehicle. After much deliberation, Mike and I have finally decided that our next vehicle purchase will be a mini-van. Mike was seriously considering a truck for a while, but the thought of (potentially) having to wrangle two car seats into a truck wasn't working for him. So mini-van it is. Since I'm a good wife I'm refraining from mentioning that I had suggested a mini-van from the beginning. It's good to let them come to these conclusions on their own. Or let them think they did. We probably won't be pulling the trigger on this purchse until the fall at the earliest, barring some unforseen problem with "the Merc". Ideally Mike would like to wait until next year, so we'll see.

Right now we're just doing research, trying to be informed buyers. It's a huge purchase and it's even harder when you get a lot of conflicting advice. Mike really likes the Dodge Grand Caravan. Now some people we've talked to love theirs. Including our mechanic, who's probably one of the last remaining truly honest mechanics out there. He even took the time to show Mike what problem areas to look for when we go out test driving. We also checked in with my sister in law's father. Before you purchase anything, and I mean anything, he's the guy you want to talk to. The last time I saw Mel's Dad I was taking a picture with my digital camera and he told me I had made a good decision, that my camera was highly rated in consumer reports. I'm not embarassed to say I was feeling a little proud of myself after that. He cautioned us against the North American models and suggested the Toyota for various reasons. Mike also purchased a Consumer Report guide on used vehicles. Which, surprise surprise, agreed with everything Mel's Dad had said. Basically what all that information boils down to is.... we have no idea what we're doing.

In wacky news this week. My brother cancelled his satelite and internet at home. You can read about it on his blog here. Mike's first response was, I'm not visiting until they get it back. Then he said something that shocked me.... "Who cancels their internet?" That was coming from Mike who's constantly asking me if we can get rid of our internet. Mike's a take it or leave it kind of guy with the internet where as I use it everyday. The TV, though, he couldn't do without. No question. It would be a hard decision, for me, which I would miss more. I would lean towards the internet I think. I really depend on the internet to keep me in contact with friends and family. Plus anything I missed on TV I could find on the internet.

Movie night last night. We rented Meet the Fockers. We were Fockerized. It was very funny. Mike's favourite movie hands down is Meet the Parents. I don't even want to estimate how many times he's watched it. We own it on DVD, but whenever it's been in the dish he watches it every chance he gets. When they announced this movie Mike felt, very strongly I might add, that Ben Stiller's parents in the movie should be played by his real life parents Jerry Stiller and Anne Meara. He was not impressed when the parts when to Barbra Streisand and Dustin Hoffman. After watching it last night even Mike had to agree that those two were a good choice. He even went so far to tell me that Dustin Hoffman was a great actor. I wonder if the Academy knows? The DVD had Mike's favourite extra.... bloopers. You know I have to say there's something almost disturbing about watching Robert DeNiro flub his lines and then break into hysterics. It's just not right.
