My Mother the Spy

"I'm just like Grissom from CSI." That's the comment my Mom made to me last night on the phone. Now on it's own that may seem like a ridiculous statement, but taken in context.... well it's still pretty ridiculous. Now before you start thinking my Mom has an unhealthy obsession with CSI and/or Grissom himself (she does by the way, that and all of the Law and Orders), let me explain.

It was my birthday last Thursday which we celebrated at my Mom's with a very yummy steak dinner (can't remember the last time I had steak that good) , chocolate cake and of course presents...... for Abby. Yes Miss Abby got new jammies and a bikini for my birthday. Okay, okay I didn't do too badly myself. Spoiled as per usual. Thanks Mom. So we have a nice evening, Abby has a bath and we head for home. Friday rolls around and my Mom calls and it's like the Spanish Inquisition.

I didn't go to work today? Why didn't I tell her I had the day off? What was I doing that evening? What was I doing Saturday? When did we have rentals? Where were they? What time did they start? What was going on Sunday? And so on. "Hey Mom, " I say, "what's with all the questions?"

"Oh nothing. I just didn't know what you were doing for the rest of the weekend. If you had anymore birthday plans." Now she's trying to make my interrogation into no big deal. Like she routinely calls and fires 35 questions at me in 35 seconds. Apparently "Grissom" forgot she had raised me to be a little more intuitive than that. Now I know something's up, but I play the game with her and we leave it at that.

Friday night we went out with friends for dinner. Just about my favourite group to spend time with. Always lots of laughs. In fact at one point I was afraid James was going to have to be resussitated, but he was okay. We pretty much closed the restaurant down. It was a really great night. Kudos to Yoles for putting it together!

Saturday morning I went shopping for some clothes and Mike went to run errands of his own. I was shopping at my Mom's store and she started with the questions again.

Where was Abby? What was I doing for the rest of the day? What time were we going out? Again I ask, what's with all the questions and she of course blows it off as no big deal. So eventually I leave her and we head over to pick up Abby at Grandma Sandi's and then on to home. At some point in the afternoon I hear Mike's cell ringing, but I can't find where he put it. Not that I was that worried about it. Usually only Yoli or myself call Mike's cell, so I was just planning on calling Yoles back from the home phone.

Now our home phone is ringing and it's my Mom calling. I don't think I even had a chance to say hello.... "Where were you? I called the house. I called your cell. I called Mike's cell. Where did you go."

"Oh I was right here using the internet. I didn't hear my cell and I couldn't find Mike's. Why what's up?"

"Oh I can't remember what I was calling you for. I call you back later." Now I'm figuring whatever's going on must be happening soon since her surveilence of me has definitley increased. Or she's totally lost her marbles. Ten minutes later I'm standing in my bathroom putting towels away and I hear the back door open. Now it's pretty typical for our family just to walk right in, expected or not. So I didn't think anything of it until a fairly large black dog was suddenly standing right in front of me. Now this particular black dog is named Adelaide and she lives in Peterborough with my brother and his wife. Surprise! Guess who came to visit!?!

There stood Dave and Mel by the back door with big grins on their faces! And suddenly it all made sense. If you're going to drive 2 hours to surprise someone for their birthday it's a good idea to have somebody working the inside. Which brings us back the Grissom comment. Now I'm just thinking here, but I would have to think that Grissom would have been a tad more subtle. And actually I would say you were more like Dog- the bounty hunter than Grissom. All and all a commendable effort! That was probably the best part of my birthday! So thanks Grissom (or the Dog depending on what your favourite show is I guess) for helping out with that. Thanks Dave and Mel for making the trip just for an evening. Love you all!!!! Best birthday ever!
