Mike and I are on our first week of holidays this week and wouldn't you know it........ it's 3 trillion degrees outside. No joke, you can feel your skin sizzle the second you step outside. Today we had a humidex alert and a smog alert, keep all young children and seniors indoors, oh and by the way would you mind turning off your air conditioner? You know strain on the power grid and all. I can tell Abby's been enjoying the time off with her Dad and I, this morning she asked if she could go to Lyn's house. I guess having a bunch of kids to play with is way more exciting than being locked in the house with her parents. I thought she would at least be a teenager before she figured out we weren't any fun to hang out with.
I did attempt to plan some fun activities for our week off. On Sunday night we were supposed to head up to my brother's for a short visit. Now Uncle Dave and Aunt Mel are very cool, so Abby would have totally been down with that. Plus they have Adelaide dog who Abby loves beyond belief. Smart Mom that I am though I never mentioned it to her, good thing because Saturday evening Dave called to say their central air wasn't working and it currently was 29 degrees on the main floor and 5 degrees hotter upstairs. Now I love my brother way more than most sisters love their brothers, but that was truly pushing it. It really did crush me to have to cancel. We last saw them the beginning of June for Abby's birthday and they leave in 2 weeks-ish for their roadie to the west coast, so I know it will be at least another month before we get to see them again. I hate not seeing them for that long. That's when I start to think..... hmmm maybe moving to Peterborough would be a good idea. Ah who am I kidding, Mike wanted to move "down the street" (literally) and I fought him tooth and nail on it.
Mike and I did make a list of things we need to get done in the house. There's about six jobs on it that would take about 15 minutes each and we've only accomplished one...... buy the pool. Which is laid out in the backyard waiting for water. Tomorrow I hope to accomplish one more.... buy Abby's couch. Robin, Tim and girls got her a gift certificate to Toys R Us for her birthday. So we decided to buy her one of those fold out couches for her toy room. I was getting a crick in my neck watching her try and lay in her folding lawn chair she has in there now. We've also been collecting items together for the garage sale we're going to have next weekend. My grandma was a tremendous pack rat. Have you seen Clean Sweep? Well multiply that by a whole house and then by a million. And guess what, those types of people have a tendency to pass away and leave you to clean out the house. I loved my Grandma to death, but seriously do you really need 4 Michael Jackson "barbie" dolls? My Mom found tupperware that she had ordered from a tupperware party my Grandma had before I was even born and Grandma forgot to give it to her. I mean it was still in it's original bag with the invoice. Mike's Mom is already well along the same path. We've tried an intervention, tough love, well everything short of electro-shock with little effect. She did call tonight to say she was bringing stuff over tomorrow for the garage sale, so I'm trying to be optomistic. So with Mike and I having that in our backgrounds we like to keep on top of the clutter. Hence the garage sale. Our spare bedroom upstairs has kind of become a dumping ground, so before it gets out of hand we're going to sell off all useless items and make it the Dora themed bedroom of Abby's dreams. Then Abby's current bedroom becomes a storage area for all baby related items until (fingers crossed) we have a need for them again.
Doctor's appointment for Abby this afternoon. I was a little concerned about her reactions to bug bites. After one particular bad bite, she swelled up from wrist to elbow. With Mike having a fatal shellfish allergy I knew she was a higher risk to have his allergy, but wasn't sure if it applied to all allergies. The good news is since she only swells and it doesn't effect her breathing in any way, there's no concern of it being or turning into a serious allergy. Actually it's fairly common for young kids to swell with bug bites and she should grow out of it. She gave me some cream and told me to switch allergy medications to something that was non-drowsy. She also suggested if we would be spending an entire day outside to give her a dose of allergy meds before heading outside as preventative measure against the swelling. There was a picture of a baby on the wall in the doctor's office and Abby must have asked 400 times if it was a picture of Baby Alex. Finally our doc asked her, oh do you have a friend named Baby Alex? WIthout missing a beat Abby said, "yes. Is that Baby Alex?"
