Well we are living in a winter wonderland around here these days. Yes folks the real snow has arrived a mere day after Michael had his cast and stitches removed. He had them out at 10:30 am Thursday morning and the snow began to fall about 6:00 pm Thursday night. He got up bright and early Friday morning to put the garbage out and managed to shovel about a third of the drive way. I was surprised he got that much done since he's been unable to make anything close to a fist with his left hand since the cast came off. Through the day Friday it snowed on and off and by evening it had appeared to be finished.
Mike and I spent Friday night making sugar cookies with Abby. She's been dying to make sugar cookies for a week now. They had a big sale on baking mixes at our grocery store so I had stocked up on cake and cookie mixes. One of the bags of cookie mixes was a sugar cookie mix and Abby must get this bag out once a day and ask if we could make some. Now I guess she's been bugging Mike to bake through the day as well. So since it was all snowy outside making it feel a bit Christmasy I decided we could make it a family project. So I whipped it up and rolled it out, Abby helped with cutting the cookies out (her aim needs a bit of work though) and Mike was in charge of sprinkles. Which was fitting since he did used to be "Sprinkle Boy", but that's a story for another time.
As I've mentioned before Abby just loves to bake, although she did decline to help make lemon squares today, and last night she really enjoyed herself. I'm sure you can imagine what an imcredible mess she and the kitchen table were. She spilled green sprinkles all over the place. Insisted on holding onto large quantities of said green and coloured sprinkles in her hot little hands until her hands were stained a rather disgusting colour. She also ate sprinkles by the handful, succeeding in staining both her mouth and chin. Abby subscribes to the "more is more" motto so her cookies were literally covered in sprinkles as was the cookie sheet. Mike usually has a very low tolerance for such messy endeavors, but he stuck it out with us until the bitter end and actually admitted to having fun. Originally the plan was to make these cookies as part of my Christmas baking, but after watching Abby put so much of herself into the project we decided that it would be better to keep them as a family treat. Funny thing is though, as much as Abby loves to bake she's not much of a cookie eater. So as of yet hasn't even sampled her own creations.
All that excitement was way too much for me to handle. So I was off to bed not long after Abby. Going to sleep so early oftens means your the first one up and boy did I get a surprise when I looked outside and saw a couple more inches had fallen last night. I spent a quiet two hours by myself cleaning up and Christmas shopping on Ebay. I thought I'd let them sleep in, so they'd be well rested for all the shovelling we were going to have to do.
Apparently suggesting Abby put snow pants on and go outside was the wrong thing to do. When I started getting us ready to go outside and help Mike shovel, well that started a tantrum of epic proportions. For some reason Abby's not a big fan of snow pants. Maybe the noise drives her nuts, maybe they make her legs feel too fat. I have no idea what her issue was, but it did lead to a chase through the house with her screaming bloody murder the whole way. I let her have her moment and once she settled down I attempted to convince that she'd have a great time outside in her snow pants. See it wasn't going outside she objected to, it was all about the snow pants. Now ordinarily I wouldn't force the issue, I mean I didn't really want to go outside either, but I felt bad for Mike and thought I should be outside to give him a hand. So I tried to appeal to Abby's helpful nature and explain that since Daddy had a boo boo on his hand he needed us to help him. Nothing. I tried to convince her how much fun we'd have outside. Still not interested. I offered to make a snowman, even though I knew it wasn't packing snow. No dice. The thing that finally sold her on it was the promise that she could throw snowballs at her Daddy. Only then did she happily consent to getting dressed and go outside.
Mike did end up shovelling most of the driveway and I finished it up. Abby had a lot of fun once she got outside. She threw a ton of snow at Mike, a little less at me and made a dozen snow angels. I hope it's not going to be this much trouble getting her outside for the rest of the winter.
