It's All Coming Back to Me Now

Maya was up twice through the night last night at about midnight and again at around 4 am. Mike got up with us both times and helped me get her bottle and everything ready before heading back to bed. Tonight he asked me if that was helpful and if I wanted him to continue getting up with us. I told him it wasn't really necessary since he has to go to work the next day. He made me promise to wake him up if I needed him for anything because, "I don't want you getting burned out and hating me like last time." So I guess maybe we did learn something from our struggles adjusting to Abby. He also asked if I wanted to take a nap this evening. I appreciated the offer, but I passed for tonight. Abby was a little over tired and cranky by this evening so I didn't think it was fair to leave Mike to deal with both of them.

I got to tell you TV in the middle of the night still sucks. I'm a smart girl though. Mike and I got lots of DVD's for Christmas so I've been saving them for these middle of the night feedings I knew were going to be in my future. So far I've watched half of season 1 of Corner Gas. If you haven't watched this show, do yourself a favour and check it out. Funny, funny stuff. I also have Oprah's Greatest Moments, Will and Grace Season 1, Seinfeld Seasons 1-6 and various seasons of Friends. If I manage to get through all that I can check out all the "disc 2's" that have come with Abby's Special Edition Disney DVD's. Special features aren't typically a favourite of the pre-school set, but I'm interested.

Both girls were up at 8 this morning. I'm rather proud to admit that by 9:30ish we had all had breakfast, Maya was back in bed, I had showered and Abby and I were both dressed. Abby watched cartoons while I made my first set of bottles. I only have 4 nipples right now so I have to make bottles twice a day based on Maya's current feeding schedule. I got off to a bit of a rocky start when for some reason my under the cabinet can opener opened the can about a quarter of an inch and then released it so it smashed back down on to the counter top. Luckily I didn't lose any of the contents. The situation didn't get any better when I attempted to mix the formula. I got down the Tupperware jug that had been Dad and Linda's that I used to mix and store batches of Abby's formula and dumped in the can of concentrate and added a can of water. Imagine my surprise at the large puddle of formula that was seeping out from under the jug. Some how in the last two and a half years the bottom of the jug had cracked. Luckily I didn't lose too much formula. Even luckier I had a clean empty jug handy to transfer the formula too before I lost too much more.

Abby and I spent the time until Maya's next feeding cleaning up the house. Abby loves to help me do household chores. Especially cooking. She's convinced that I cannot make dinner without her. With our tidying up done we watched the Swan Princess while I folded laundry. Abby was a big help feeding Maya her bottle. She's been bragging to everyone who will listen about how she got Maya to burp all by herself today. She spent an endless amount of time just staring at her baby sister. If Maya so much as made a peep I'd hear, "Mom I think my baby's going to cry." A couple of times I found her upstairs just watching Maya sleep. She's also officially changed her name to Abby Ida Leanne Revill Big Sister.

Tonight was bath night for both girls. Abby had hers first so she could help wash Maya. I warned her before that Maya was going to scream. Loud. While she had her bath. So as we washed her and Maya screamed Abby asked, "Daddy, can you make her stop?" When Mike couldn't get Maya to stop screaming Abby climbed up beside her tub and sang Twinkle Twinkle Little Star.

After reading about our struggles with Abby's behaivour since Maya's been born a friend suggested having a baby jar and a big girl jar. Depending on how Abby behaves she gets to put money in the appropriate jar. Abby really wants the "Flubber movie" so I thought the money concept would appeal to her. It seems to be working. The poor thing cries her heart out when she has to put money int the baby jar. Tells me she wants to be a big girl and buy her Flubber movie at Wal Mart. The last couple of days she's been very good and she's managed to get a couple of dollars in her jar. Tonight I bought Flubber on ebay for her since she really has been a huge help with Maya and it was a super great deal. At bedtime I thanked her for all her help and we talked about her big girl bowl. Thinking she doesn't have a real concept about money I told her that I thought she had made enough to buy her Flubber movie.

Abby: "No, not yet Mom. I still need a little more."

Quick as a whip she is.
