Well today was art day. It got off to a shaky start with me not getting much sleep last night and Maya have a fussy morning. I thought I was going to have to abandon the whole project. Which would have only disappointed me since Abby knew nothing about it. Then Maya, thankfully, fell into a deep sleep and slept for a couple of hours.
I got Abby dressed in some old clothes and told her I had a surprise for her. She got very excited and then started to guess what it was. Well I guess it wasn't relly guessing since she thought she knew what it was.
Abby: It's Auntie Yoli! Auntie Yoli's my surprise. And Auntie Mel. They're coming to my house.
It broke my heart a little bit when she ran down stairs and opened the back door because she was certain they were in the driveway waiting for her. Smooth move on my part. Lucky for me she accepted that her favourite Aunties weren't there without much fussing. I sent her to the living room to wait while I got her art stuff out.
The project I picked was a set of three porcelain pig heads that she could paint. She had a smile from ear to ear when I brought her to the table. You can check out the pictures on flickr. She graciously offered to let me paint one of the pig heads, but she did help me with it. Not wanting to forget her Aunties she asked if she could give them her pig heads. So Mel whenever you want to pick yours up, it's here. Yoles is getting hers tomorrow afternoon.
Once she had decreed her pig heads were works of art.... and they were. I gave her some paper to use up the rest of the paints. She seemed a little limited with the brush so, and I can't believe I did this, I told her she could use her fingers. Which she did. The paints that came with her kit were the tiny little plastic pots that are connected by plastic tabs to one another. So she could sink four of her little fingers into four different pots of paint at the same time. That still wasn't producing the desired effect so she resorted to pouring the paint right onto the paper. Then I taught her how to make prints by placing another paper on top of the first piece. Which was really my creative way of getting her to sop up the lake of paint before the construction paper completely disintegrated.
I think the best part was getting her to tell me what each of her paintings was about. The one featured above is Adelaide the dog. There was another painting, which looks strikingly like this one of Adelaide, but is actually a bee. It was the only painting she did today that wasn't a picture of family.
I had so much fun spending that time with her today that Maya fussing and crying for over an hour tonight wasn't hardly as frusterating as it has been. I can't wait to do the next project. Thank goodness for Dollarama.
