Today's Tip: Take some time and do a bit of research before you head out to the grocery store. I'm not suggesting you go to 16 different stores to get all the best prices. Personally, we head for the store that gives us the best overall deal. Until yesterday that had been WalMart and Food Basics, but I recently signed up for the No Frills flyer to be delivered via email. Thank goodness I did because the deals there were out of this world. Big jug of Tropicana for $3.97. A 400 g tub of cream cheese, Philadelphia cream cheese even, for $2.97. The regular bricks are 250g for around $3. They were also advertising premium ice cream for $3.97 (reg price $6+). I was planning on buying Rolo ice cream, but I almost wet my pants when I saw they had KIT KAT ICE CREAM. I was in heaven because Kit Kat is the greatest food ever to be invented. If you don't get a lot of flyers at your house I recommend signing up to have them delivered to your inbox or view them online before heading out the door.
Savoury Beef Sandwiches
1 Beef Roast
2 cups water
1/2 cup soy sauce
1 tsp garlic powder
Put all ingredients in the crock pot. Set to low for 8 hours or high for 4 hours. Before serving shred beef & arrange on sandwich buns. Retain juice from crockpot, divide into bowls for dipping.
What we would/did change:
I make this all the time, but we've never eaten it as sandwiches. I always just take the roast out of the crock pot, slice it and serve it like regular roast beef. I've used all different cuts and sizes of roasts with this recipe and every one has turned out fantastic. The juice I usually put in a pot on the stove and thicken it with whatever your favourite thickening agent is flour, bisto, cornstarch. Serve with mashed potatoes and veggies. I was once forced to cook this recipe in the oven and it turned out just as good. It's totally fail safe and it's the only way I make roast beef anymore. This is a great time saver recipe too since you can assemble all the ingredients in the crock pot the night before and leave it in the fridge overnight. Just drop the liner in the crock pot in the morning and turn it on.

I'm feeling a little generous today so here's another recipe for you:

Scones (AKA Circles)
2 cups flour
2 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp baking soda
1 tsp salt
1/4 cup sugar
1/3 cup margarine
1 egg yolk (reserve the egg white)
1 cup sour cream
Cut margarine into dry ingredients. Add sour cream and egg yolk. Mix until blended. Roll out to 1 inch thick, cut out and brush with egg white. Place on an ungreased cookie sheet. Bake at 350 degrees for 15 minutes or until golden brown.
What we would/did change: I love scones, but I have never been able to make scones or biscuits that didn't have the weight and texture of a hockey puck. I stumbled across this recipe somewhere and was intrigued because lard/shortening wasn't one of the listed ingredients. Another thing that keeps me from making biscuits I never have shortening in the house. Margarine and sour cream though can almost always be found in my fridge. What the hell I'd give them a try. Well these are the easiet things to make and they are absolutely delicious. The orginal recipe called for raisins, but I like them better without. They go great with all kind of different meals pasta dishes, roast beef dinners, holiday meals. The recipe says to roll out the dough, but I've found it's even easier to work it out to an inch thick with your hands. I cut them out with a small juice glass about 2.5 inches in diameter and that gives me about 15 biscuits. I have made this recipe many times now and never once have we had dry biscuits, even second day. You make these with the above roast, mashed taters and some veggies and everybody will be serioiusly impressed. This is an Abby favourite recipe. She calls them circles because I let her help cut the dough out into... what else circles.
