Well to quote Chevy Chase (I think from Caddyshack), "the shortest distance between two points is a straight line in the opposite direction". It was that totally twisted logic that Michael used in planning our trip downtown yesterday afternoon. That or he was practicing for his career move into the world of taxi cab driving. If so, nice "short cut" baby. Your dispatcher would be proud.
So our final destination was the intersection of Caroline and Napier, just a block over from Copps. We've travelled to this destination many many times in the past. To park for events at Copps, to attend various functions for Linda's work and so on. It wasn't like we were entering into uncharted territory. Maybe the heat was getting to him yesterday because while he should have taken the Main street, left on Hess, right on Napier, right on Caroline route he instead took the much more circuitous route of: Main Street; left on Locke; right on Napier; right on Ray; left on Market; left through the hotel parking lot; left on Napier and finally left onto Caroline.
Now friends you don't have to have a working knowldege of Hamilton geography to see appreciate that he turned off the street he needed to be on so he could loop a few city blocks around it before picking it back up again. Not to mention that in order to pick it back up again he need to take a "shortcut" through a hotel parking lot. When we finally arrived at our destination I climbed out of the van, surveyed my surroundings and turn to him to ask in a supportive spouse kind of way...
Me: What in the hell was that? You do realize that you turned off Napier only to go out of your way so you could be on Napier? What in the hell were you thinking?
Him: Shut up.
Me: No seriously. You had the map book out, didn't you look at it?
Him: This is the only way I knew how to get here.
Me: Did you plan this route out ahead of time? I mean, I just don't know what to say.
Him: Can we drop it?
Me: Come on. You were on Napier.
Him: Yeah I get it.
Me: You do realize I am going to mock you forever about this.
Him: Well I guess you gotta write about something.
Me: Yes I do. Thanks honey.
Folks we are leaving in a few hours for Peterborough. We have been there many times before, but today I'm afraid we just might end up there by way of Ottawa.
