new and improved

I admit it, when it comes to Abby's hair I have a hang up. I'm not exactly sure why I do, but I do. Maybe it's because when she was born all pink and tiny she had this full head of dark hair. I mentioned yesterday that she was born bum first and she was, completely folded in half and I'm certain it was so she didn't muss up her hair during the delivery. Abby spent her first five days in NICU and all the nurses raved about her hair and it's just never stopped. So it's probably safe to say that sometime in the past five years her identity, in my mind, has become closely link to all that hair.

A couple of years ago after much hand wringing and fretting on my part I made the decision to cut her some bangs. I felt sick to my stomach after I had made the decision, but once I saw her with them, knew they suited her face perfectly. Over the years Abby's hair has become a bit problematic, well I guess to be fair it's more Abby that the hair. She can put up quite a fuss about having it washed, conditioned, styled and of course brushed. Oh the endless fight about brushing. Now usually to brushing precedes styling which she isn't always down with either, but it must be done. Loose (long) hair + kindegarten almost always equals head lice. And been there, done that, don't need to do it again. So I have been toying with the idea of getting her hair cut a "bit shorter". Which was making me a bit sick to my stomach. And then......

And then Mike found a little pile of hair on the kitchen floor. Hair that looked remarkable like the hair found on Abby's head. Turns out with the help of the trusty kitchen scissors Abby had chopped a rather large chunk out of her hair. It was now short enough in one area, that it wouldn't stay in her pony tail for school. Something was going to have to be done as much as that very idea made me throw up a little in my mouth. And today was the day...

Good news is, I love it, she loves it, her Dad loves it and Maya was too busy playing with Zebby to form any kind of an opinion either way.

As much as I do love it I wasn't prepared for how much it was going to make her like a five year old and not so much my baby anymore. Something I'm sure is going to happen more and more.
