what's cooking wednesday - cookie monster cupcakes

Well this is going to be more of a how-to then a recipe, technically speaking. Another great idea I wish I could take credit for, but I shamelessly borrowed it from the fabulous Amy at my blog. This is a great "recipe" for the Cool Mom Campaign, especially during times of damage control, like now. Future campaign point deductions are looming for the following atrocities - I lost the family hairbrush. Yes we only have, or rather had, one. And it's gone. It's been gone since before the weekend and I may have resorted to brushing hair with a small pink plastic dolls brush. Abby barely tolerates having her hair brushed with a regular brush, imagine the scene as I attempted it with a brush 1/8 the size. Also one morning, the day of kindergarten graduation pictures, I may have sent her with scarecrow hair to the sitters and begged her to make Abby look presentable. Yeah, I'm all kinds of awesome.

If only that were it, today I forgot to send Abby a sandwich in her lunch. Abby likes to take grilled cheese for lunch. Yes, it cold by lunch time, but she likes it so, whatever. Usually I make her lunch the night before, but make the grilled cheese in the morning. Guess who forgot today? I did remember around lunch time and was horrified. I felt awful for the rest of the day. Of course I had to do this on a school day. If she was at the sitters they would have made her a sandwich and I wouldn't have felt any less horrified, but at least she would have been fed. Today she was going to have to make do with the snacks I had packed as an accompaniment to her sandwich. Figuring she was going to be starving by the time we picked her up at the sitters, I brought her a treat to eat on the way home. When I handed it over I apologized profusely for forgetting her sandwich. She cocked her head and looked at me for a moment before saying, "Oh yeah, I thought something was missing!" Oh, I also forgot today was culture day. So this morning found me jamming a hand painted Ukrainian Easter egg (a wooden version) in Abby's hand and quickly trying to explain what is was. The conversation went something like this......

Me: This is a Ukrainian Easter egg. Granny is Ukrainian.
Abby: Me-krainian?
Me: Ukrainian.
Abby: Me-krainian?
Me: You.
Abby: Me?

Sigh.... see why I need these cupcakes.

cookie monster cupcakes

1 dozen (or two) cupcakes in your preferred flavour
white frosting
blue sprinkles
6 (or 12) cookies in your preferred flavour, cut in half
small amount of black/chocolate frosting

When your cupcakes have been baked and cooled, frost each of them with a decent layer of white frosting. You want to give the cookie a bit of a base to stick too, so don't be too skimpy on the frosting. Now either dip your frosted cupcakes in the blue sprinkles or sprinkle enough on top to cover the frosting. Now cut each of your cookies in half. With a piping bag or a ziploc bag with the corner snipped off pipe a line of frosting down the cut edge of the cookie. This will be the glue that holds the whole thing together. Next, with your piping or ziploc bag pipe two round circles for the whites of the eyes. Finally pipe two small black/chocolate dots in the middle of each eye.

Recipe Notes: A little labour intensify, sure, but so very worth it. Abby thought these were great and they didn't require anything special to make them. I like the longer style candy sprinkles that Amy used on hers. I think it's more like cookie monster's fur, but that would have required a trip to the bulk barn and there just isn't one conveniently located for me. Also taking a closer look at Amy's she may have cut a slit in her cupcake and slid the whole cookie in. I didn't attempt that, but will give it a try the next time around. Also you could use brown mini m&M's for the pupils on his eyes instead of frosting in a pinch. You can mix these up too, red sprinkles and a round orange jujube for a nose look like Elmo. And green sprinkles with piped black eye brows look like Oscar.

What is What's Cooking Wednesday and how can I play?

What's cooking Wednesday was born out of a desire to get out of that what's for dinner rut. Playing is easy, on Wednesday post a recipe that has been tried and tested by you and then pop over here and add your name to the Mr. Linky. When entering your name also add the name of the recipe in brackets and make sure you link to your What's Cooking Wednesday post and not just your blog's front page. And don't forget to link back here, the home of What's Cooking Wednesday.

So for example I would write Shan (Speedy Chicken Stir Fry) in the name section. For the URL section I would post this: http://shanrev.blogspot.com/2007/10/whats-cooking-wednesday-speedy-chicken.html

I'll let you in on a little secret. Much to Kaffy's chagrin, my WCW recipes are almost never made on a Wednesday. So feel free to cook and photograph whenever you have time and join us posting on Wednesday.

I'm *killing* myself laughing over here, Shan! It gets even funnier: I asked Maddie what the other kids said/brought in for culture day and she said, "Well, Abby brought in an egg from China and explained to the class that her family comes from China".

ROTFLMAO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So funny.

I was running around looking for something with a shamrock on it at the same time you were looking for your egg. Dave said we should send her in with a beer and a potato.

Anyway...
I LOVE those cupcakes.
:)
(oh, my sides...)

p.s. Other post deleted due to spelling mistakes I made because I was laughing so hard I couldn't type properly.
