Rant About Movies

Mike and I have been watching more than our fair share of movies in the last fews days. Just last night we watched The Dukes of Hazzard remake. Mike of course was a huge fan on the TV show back in the day. You could even call him a super fan. If there's anything to know about the series he knows it. Now Mike of course had already seen the movie in theater, but I hadn't. I actually didn't have much interest in watching it at all, but Mike had asked if I would so I did. I will admit to being a fan of the show myself back in my younger days. Back then I thought Bo was the hottest thing going, now that I've matured I'm definitley a Luke man now. I wasn't expecting to like it and I wasn't disappointed.

First of all the casting was far from great. Willie Nelson, lookswise, was a great bet for Uncle Jesse. Johnny Knoxville and Seann William Scott weren't terrific. Jessica Simpson was terrible. The show originally was a pretty moral show. The Dukes were protrayed as good decent people. Not so much in the movie. I realize you've got to move with the times, but I really believe that rewriting the Dukes as a pretty crass bunch did a real deservice to the whole series. I'm not bieng a prude here I love this new genre of "gross out homour" as much as the next guy. Old School and 40 Year Old Virgin are among my favourite flicks, but those were based on an original idea. In the series Boss Hogg was always scheming and trying to pull of some get rich scam in a bumbling sort of way, in the movie he was just pure evil. Uncle Jesse had a potty mouth. I think on the show the worse they said was shucks. The orginal Daisy while scantily dressed at times didn't walk around with all of her underwear hanging out looking like a ho. I have seen many many interviews with the original cast and they still talk of the show with great fondness. I wonder what they think of the 2005 version?

Sunday night we watched Titanic. It happened to be playing on the dish. Neither one of us had seen it in quite some time. I loved this movie and actually saw it 3 times in the theater. It was getting near to the end of the movie. The ship was largely water and they're showing a montage of people's last moments. The last moments of a mother with her children reduced me to tears.

Mike: "Are you crying?"

Me: "Yes."

Mike: "It's only a movie."

Me: "No Mike that really happened to people."

Mike: "Yes I know that, but this is only a movie."

Fictionalized or not the fact of the matter is many many people, men, women and children died when that ship went down. Being a mom now I couldn't imagine knowing that my child wasn't going to survive the night. Add being pregnant and hormonal to that and well I just cry at anything these days. Including a very ridiculous A&W commercial. So as I was crying at this movie I started thinking about how they've made the Titanic into an inflatable slide. Have you ever seen or heard of this before? Check it out here if you haven't. When did it become okay to turn a tragedy into an amusement ride? Would people tolerate a amusement attraction based on 9/11? How about a tsunami wave park? Another one of those things that pisses me off.

Michael stumbled upon a little independent film neither of us had heard of before called The Third Wheel, starring my two secret boyfriends Luke Wilson and Ben Affleck. It was an enjoyable movie about a guy trying to have the perfect date with his dream girl but he ends up hitting a homeless person with his car and then can't get rid of him. It's Luke Wilson at his awkward best. I mean it wasn't movie of the year or anything, but I didn't feel like I wasted my time.

I also managed to catch the new Assault on Precinct 13. It was your typical action flick. Lots of gun fire, blood and of course swearing. Can't have a good action movie without those. I was expecting it to follow the standard hostage movie formula, but it did surprise me a bit here and there. I can't compare it to the original because I haven't seen it, but it was an okay way to spend a Sunday morning.

I'll close with a little baby update. I am now 35 weeks, getting more and more uncomfortable by the minute. I did find one thing that does help with my restless leg syndrome, which is out of control now that I'm back to work. My lovely goregous and extremely talented mother was here on the weekend and gave me an incredible back, head and leg massage. My legs felt amazing for the rest of the day. I told she was going to have to move in. She thinks I was kidding. Mike, to his credit, tried to help me out with a massage last night, but he really doesn't have all the strength back in his hand yet and his other hand of course is still crippled with carpal tunnel. The thought was nice though. I continue to have Braxton Hicks contractions which continue to freak Mike out. I keep telling him I'll let him know when he should start worrying. I think it's a good idea to get some sort of plan into place soon. I had Abby at 37 weeks so it wouldn't hurt to be prepared. Mike finished up the baseboard in Abby's new bedroom tonight so she can move in tomorrow. Then Mike can get the crib rebuilt in the nursery and I can start washing some clothes and getting all the new baby things ready. So it won't be mass chaos if this baby decides to surprise us too. Guess what... Sandi asked Mike today what name we had picked out for a girl and my lovely Michael said Emma. I guess that means I win!! I'm just kidding. I told him we could decide for sure when we saw the baby. So keep your fingers crossed if it's a girl she looks like an Emma.
