Fun With Abby

Do you remember that commercial? It was on about 10 years ago. For the life of my I can't remember what the commercial was for, but I do remember that it portrayed a bunch of parents standing around talking about their kids. The "Commercial Dad" who was talking about his son's abuse of the home electronic equipment was played by James Eckhouse better known as Jim Walsh patient father of Brandon and Brenda Walsh of Beverly Hills, 90210 fame. Actually it was probably more than 10 years ago since 90210 debuted in 1990 (16 years ago now, Holy Crap am I old!) and I'm pretty sure James cut back on the commercial work once he was on the biggest teenage drama of the 90's. Boy have I ever wandered away from my point.

Anyway, I thought of this commercial today as I was talking on the phone with my Mom this morning. I was sitting at my desk since she'd interupted the little ebay shopping spree I was on. Bought myself a little something this morning for the bargain basement price of 99 cents. Abby had been watching cartoons in the living room and Maya was napping in her crib. As Abby came back to the office I could hear her crying. Just a little bit. Her I've "done something I shouldn't have and now I'll be getting in trouble" cry.

Abby: Mommy I put it in there and now I can't get it out. (Something every parent wants to hear from their 3 year old)

Me: You put what where?

Abby: The game. Now I can't get it out.

Ah ha! I remembered 20 minutes ago when she had asked to play Xbox. Specifically PacMan World 2. Now she's been borrowing VHS tapes from both Grandma Linda and Grandma Diane and since then she's figured out how to use the VCR. Are you following me?

Me: Did you put the game in the VCR and now you can't get it out?

Abby: Yes.

And she's crying again. So I hang up from Mom and go to check out the situation. I push the VCR door flap open and sure enough there's PacMan World 2 in the VCR. The bitch of it is, the game is exactly as wide as the VCR tape "chamber" (I have no idea what to call it, where you put the tapes). So it went in the VCR fine, but getting it out was posing a bit of a problem. As soon as you pushed the door flap open it caught the edge of the disc and pushed it up to the top of the chamber. I couldn't figure out how in the hell I was going to get it out of there. So I sat and repeatedly pushed the flap open and the disc repeatedly rode up to the top of the chamber because eventually it would shrink right? Then I'd be able to easily slide the disc right back out. Either that or I'm a moron.

So when I have safely concluded that the disc wasn't going to shrink, it was going to kept riding the door flap to the top of the chamber I thought I'd better call Mike. Not because I thought it was an emergency, but because I thought it was pretty funny.

Me: Your daughter put an Xbox game in the VCR and now I can't get it out.

Mike: Put his grilled cheese in the VCR. Slid it right it.

That folks is why I love him. Because he "gets" me.

Maya had a doctor's appointment today so while we did that Abby went for a sleepover with Grandma Sandi. Maya was 6 pounds 13 ounces when we left the hospital Tuesday. Today she was 7 pounds 7.5 ounces. She's gaining weight much quicker than Abby did. She's also 21 and a quarter inches long. As for her spock ears they should straighten themselves out eventually. One of the first things the doc said was, "oh her ears are still pointy, how cute." She's also still a little bow legged. Our doc did listen for her heart murmur which she finally heard after a little while. She said compared to Abby's it's quite quiet. She was happy she was finally able to hear so she has a basis of reference for future appointments.

Abby was excited about going for her sleepover, but I think the last month has had an adverse effect on her. She called tonight from Grandma Sandi's to make sure we were going to come and get her tomorrow. She asked me and then she needed to ask her Daddy too. she was also concerned that "her baby was back at the hospital." Mike assured her she wasn't but I'm not sure he convinced her.

The parents then talked about how thrifty serving kool aid to the kids was. Its only pennys a glass!
