Pocket Sized Films, Jane Fonda and Jesus

It's been well documented on this very blog that I think my brother is pretty terrific. I think he's remarkably talented. I was very disappointed when he decided to aboandon his own personal blog. He's a great writer and I miss reading it. Plus keeping in touch IRL isn't something that Dave necessarily does well as a day to day thing. In times of crisis though, he's there, no question. He and Mel were both such a comfort to us during Maya's first turbulent weeks of life.

Dave explores his creative side in many ways. He paints (his robot painting is outstanding), is somewhat musically inclined, is a fearless home renovator and loves the culinary arts. He and Mel have managed to turn Mike on to both sushi and Indian Food. Not a small feat by any means. Mike, as a rule, isn't very adventurous in any aspect of his life. He also enjoys graphic design, dabbling in many things such as silk screening and web design. Recently he's started playing around with video. They've been making "Story of You" introductory shorts about the members of The Third Space for quite some time now. It's a great way to bring a new community together.

This is all bringing me to a point. Just this past week a new website called pocketsizedfilms.com was launched by my brother, among others. Right now they have two short (3 minutes-ish) films available for your viewing pleasure. Having seen both offerings I can say that I was impressed with what they have accomplished. To compare The Moustachener with Catch Me Sleeping would be like comparing apples and oranges, but like apples and oranges they're both great. Both shorts feature my very handsome brother so I could be biased. If you're a fan of movies I recommend you check it out.

Today I was finishing up some painting in Abby's room while Maya napped. Abby, my ever helpful shadow, was of course by my side every second. To buy myself some breathing room for a moment or two I asked if she would read me a story while I painted. She disappeared across the hall to our bedroom and came back several minutes later with Jane Fonda's autobiography my Mom had loaned me when I was stuck in the hospital. This book is thick, apparently Jane had a lot to get off her chest. I wouldn't be surprised if it weighed more than Abby does. Somehow she manages to make it back with this phone book of an autobiography without dropping it on her or my toes. Sitting with the book on her lap, she opens it somewhere in the middle and starts to "read".

Abby: I love my Mommy, Daddy and Maya. I love Uncle Dave, Auntie Mel and Auntie Yoli. I like Kailey, Breanne, Robin, Tim. They're my friends.

Me: What about Courtney and Nikki? (They're Robin and Tim's other daughter's, who for some reason Abby never seems to mention when talking about her friends.)

Abby flipping pages: Oh they're in here. And look Mom here's your Great Grandpa. (She's opened the book to a page with Jane, her father and Katherine Hepburn, a picture from On Golden Pond).

Abby discards the book and comes to sit beside me. "Mom, do you want to talk about Jesus?" She doesn't wait for me to answer, which is good because if I open my mouth I will pee my pants laughing. She was just so serious. "There were angels and the men brought the baby gold."

I related that story to Mike when he got home from work. He asked Abby how she knew so much about Jesus. "Because Mommy told me." A lot of Abby's story books are religious in nature and she picks those stories quite often for her bedtime book. She's also been compulsively watching her "Moses movie" (The Prince of Egypt). I've have often wondered between that and church how much she obsorbs and retains. Today I was pleasantly surprised.
