what's cooking wednesday - candy bar brownies

Let me start out by saying, these are not your every day brownies. Not that I wouldn't want to eat them every day because of my sick chocolate addiction that propels me to do those kinds of things, but really they shouldn't ever be ingested that pften. This recipe comes from the Goddess of Over Indulgence herself, Miss Paula Deen. And in her words, these are sinful, y'all. I first heard vaguely about this recipe from Grandma Linda and tucked it back in my mind for another time. Then last week found me parked on the couch with Abby watching a lot of Food Network, which sounds like a pretty cruel thing to do, make the child with the severe stomach virus watch the Food Network, but to be truthful she was sleeping most of the time. And when she was up she was too miserable to even have an opinion about what we were watching on TV. Although she did manage to croak out that Paula Deen sounded like the Boss' wife. I wasn't quite sure which boss she was talking about until she added, "the Boss on the Dukes of Hazzard", and that led to a fun conversation about accents.

Boy that got ridiculously off track didn't it? Anyway long story short, catching Paula Deen's show reminded me of this brownie recipe Grandma Linda had mentioned and after last week I thought I could do with a bit of a reward.

Paula Deen's Chocolate Bar Brownies

Ingredients:
1 (17.6-ounce) package brownie mix with walnuts
Vegetable oil cooking spray
3 (6-ounce) candy bars

Directions:
Prepare the brownie mix according to package directions.

Grease and flour a 13 by 9-inch cake pan or spray with non stick cooking spray.

Spoon in half of the brownie batter and smooth with a spatula or the back of a spoon. Place the candy bars side by side on top of the batter. Cover with the remaining batter.

Bake according to package directions. Let cool completely, if you can resist them that long!

Recipe Notes: Well my brownie mix, (buy a good one like Duncan Hines, don't cheap out) called for an 8 or 9 inch square pan. Since I don't seem to own either of those, I baked mine in a 8 inch round. Also I had only picked up two chocolate bars, so that's all I put it in. I went with the Mars bar, since that's what I was feeling like at the time. Also make sure to check your baking times, I ended up having to bake this about 10 minutes longer than the package directions.Which is probably a lot to do with not having the correct pan. All in all a perfectly decadent chocolate brownie.

What is What's Cooking Wednesday and how can I play?

What's cooking Wednesday was born out of a desire to get out of that what's for dinner rut. Playing is easy, on Wednesday post a recipe that has been tried and tested by you and then pop over here and add your name to the Mr. Linky. When entering your name also add the name of the recipe in brackets and make sure you link to your What's Cooking Wednesday post and not just your blog's front page. And don't forget to link back here, the home of What's Cooking Wednesday.

So for example I would write Shan (Speedy Chicken Stir Fry) in the name section. For the URL section I would post this: http://shanrev.blogspot.com/2007/10/whats-cooking-wednesday-speedy-chicken.html

I'll let you in on a little secret. Much to Kaffy's chagrin, my WCW recipes are almost never made on a Wednesday. So feel free to cook and photograph whenever you have time and join us posting on Wednesday.
