firday high five - i'm loving

I have no idea why things still seem so chaotic around here. I feel like I am endlessly picking up around the house without it ever really looking like it's clean or even tidy. Schedules that we were following have fallen by the wayside. Somehow we've got to get ourselves back on track. Here's hoping today is that day!

Until then, let me just waste some more time on here and tell you the five things I am loving right now.... aside from Michael, the girls and the rest of my fabulous peeps.

1) Pretzel m&m's. My mom brought me a bag this week and I may have used them to self medicate after a particular trying homework session with Abby and Maya on a single parent night. What's even better is Mike hates them and the girls don't know such a thing exists! That means no sharing!!

2) Raising Hope, it's on Tuesdays right after Glee (which I have to say has yet to wow my socks off this season. The Rocky Horror was good, but I'm not a big RHPS fan so...). It's a quirky little show and I love quirky. Also Cloris Leachman kills me as the only occasionally lucid Maw Maw.

3) My cellie! It may not be the iPhone I have been coveting, but my plan is dirt cheap and it lets me broadcast my life to the internet while I'm out and about.

4) Christmas! Yes, I am already starting to fill up with the Christmas spirit. I've got gifts stacking up in my closet and plans for fun family Christmas activities swirling around in my head. And yes I will do your Christmas baking for you. Prices are coming!

5) Everyday with Rachel Ray magazine. Admittedly I am not a huge Ray Ray fan and I have no idea why I even grabbed this magazine, but I really enjoy everything about it, the articles, layout and the recipes. Can't wait for next month's issue.

What are you loving these days?

what's cooking wednesday

Time to let me know what you've been cooking up in your kitchens!

What is What's Cooking Wednesday and how can I play?

What's cooking Wednesday was born out of a desire to get out of that what's for dinner rut. Playing is easy, on Wednesday post a recipe that has been tried and tested by you and then pop over here and add your name to the Mr. Linky. When entering your name also add the name of the recipe in brackets and make sure you link to your What's Cooking Wednesday post and not just your blog's front page. *All front page links will be deleted!* Don't make me be a jerk. And don't forget to link back here, the home of What's Cooking Wednesday.

So for example I would write Shan (Speedy Chicken Stir Fry) in the name section. For the URL section I would post this: http://shanrev.blogspot.com/2007/10/whats-cooking-wednesday-speedy-chicken.html

I'll let you in on a little secret, my WCW recipes are almost never made on a Wednesday. So feel free to cook and photograph whenever you have time and join us posting on Wednesday

1949-1985

I hadn't yet realized the significance of the date when you crept into my mind earlier today. You do that, every now and then, pop up in the most unlikely places. I was at church, knitting while the girls had their choir practice. They sat with their backs to me, practicing next Sunday's hymn, but even from that angle I could tell they were enjoying themselves. I heard their voices blending in with the rest of the choir. What a happy sound. And there you were.

I found myself wishing very hard that you could be there right at that moment to hear what I was hearing. To hear the joy. I was disappointed and maybe even a little angry because somewhere inside of me I feel like it all could have been different if you could have only found a better way. That being said, I wouldn't trade what I have for anything. It's a real double edged sword you've left me with because I honestly feel that the path you set us on led me here and I love here more than anything in the world. I guess that's the silver lining to the whole thing.

I can only imagine you thought we'd be better off without you and I can't say I agree with that, but you were right in your estimation that Mom would be able to handle everything, that you were leaving us in the best possible care. You were. You did. She's amazing. We wouldn't have made it without her.

It's been 25 years since I've seen you and I miss you every day. I miss you for myself, for Mike, for Abby and Maya. I hope, somehow, you know that.

pure awesome

I have always loved to read and nothing made me happier twenty plus years ago than to crack the spine on a new Sweet Valley High book. This series was all the rage back in the day. So imagine my surprise and utter delight when I stumbled upon this article.

Oh my gosh, she's written a "10 years later" book. I am not even going to try and hide my excitement about that. I will for sure be picking up a copy on March 29th!

Did you read Sweet Valley High? Who was your favourite twin? Or did you have another favourite series?

touch a truck

A little over a year ago the principal at Abby's school suggested we organize a Touch-a-Truck event as a fundraiser for our school. Saturday found us and six other local public schools up to our eyeballs in trucks of every shape, size and description.

The number one question I get whenever I've mentioned this event is.... What is Touch-a-Truck?

Well the organizing committee got together 60 different vehicles at our local fairgrounds. We had just about any truck you could think of.... fire, ambulance, milk, water, transport, boom, horse trailers, a helicopter, race cars, heavy equipment, the bookmobile and a homemade transformer car to name a few.

Transformer car

These vehicles were "open" to the public. You were able to get up close and personal with all the vehicles, sit in them, climb on them, take pictures with them. This was our first time with this event and none of us were really sure what to expect. By the time things got underway at 10am I was already declaring the entire thing an overwhelming success. Right away we had scads of people piling in the gates. There were vehicles stashed in all three horse rings and every available nook and cranny they could find in between.

Touch a truck

This event was organized with the co-operation of the other 6 local public schools in our area with the proceeds from the gate being split evenly between. Additionally each parent's council was invited to have their own booth to raise additional council funds. Not really knowing what to expect we opted to do face painting, temporary tattoos and balloons.

The balloon man

I think I pretty much just blew up balloons all day. Mike and Grandma Linda were selling them almost faster than we could get them blown up. My hands were a mess after 5 hours of tying up latex balloons. At some point in the days before the event ML had the great idea that we set up a corn "sand" box.

Corn sandbox

I will admit I didn't know if it was really worth the work. It was a pretty labour intensive project getting ML's old 16 foot inflatable ring pool set up to fill with corn, but it turned out to be the hit of the day....

The pool is full

A $2 donation gave the kids a "play-all-day pass" (aka a green dot on their hand). At one point Papa counted 20 kids in that thing. Luckily young Andrew took the job of policing that project and ran with it because while I was up to my eyeballs with balloons, ML and Roberta were painting faces non-stop while Jen bounced between face painting, temporary tattoos and helping me with balloons. We really could have used three more sets of hands and that was after putting my kids, Papa and Grandma Linda to work too.

Some observations...
  • By and large the crowd was made up of mostly families (they estimate about 8000 people came through), but I was surprised at how many couples were there to check things out.
  • Also interesting, how eager the ladies were to climb in and out of all the different vehicles. Wasn't just the little ones who were excited about the opportunity to sit behind the wheel of a big rig.
  • And the lines... folks were lining up 10 and 20 deep to get into some of the heavy equipment.
  • I really would have loved the chance to roam around and snap some pictures, but we were just too busy to even take much of a break. That place was ripe with awesome photo opportunities. The ones I posted are just quick shots I snapped with my phone.
  • I 100% admit, ML was right. The corn was a fabulous idea and well worth the work we put into it. Next year we'll just make it a little less labour intensive.
  • Saturday was the first time we'd volunteered as a family. Abby helped out selling balloons and temporary tattoos. Maya was in charge of cutting ribbon for the balloons. Even more heartwarming.... I hadn't asked either of them to help, they just pitched in on their own.
  • To the ladies I worked with on Saturday, a million thank yous for being such amazing Moms. So glad to call you friends. To Papa and Grandma Linda, thanks for watching my babies and thanks for helping out even though I hadn't asked.
  • Our council did very well, bringing in a respectable amount of cash. There are, of course, expenses that will come out of that, but most of it was a one time purchases. Meaning next year will be bigger and better for our bottom line.
  • This is way up there was one of the coolest events I have been involved with. Cannot wait to do it all again next year.

just trying to keep up

Tonight on the way home from riding lessons.....

Abby: My legs are freezing.
Mike: Well it's getting cold out now Abs. You have to make sure you are dressing warm enough for riding lessons. (she was wearing yoga pants)
Maya: I have my winter riding pants on! (she was wearing yoga pants too)
Abby: You don't have riding pants Maya. You don't even ride a horse. (of course she doesn't, she's only 4)
Maya: I ride a toy horse. On Grandma's porch!

Please imagine that last part said with as much "so there!" attitude as she could muster.

what's cooking wednesday

So today is Wednesday, which means yesterday was Tuesday and when I would normally post the Mr. Linky for What's Cooking Wednesday. Only yesterday I was so focused on finishing up that super huge project I was working on that I didn't realize it was Tuesday. Even though I should have.

Can you forgive me?

Just to make it up to you I will throw in this super cute Abby story... no extra charge.

So Mike and Abby are in the kitchen. Mike's asked her how her day was and she's filling him in on that day's Silly Bandz trades. Then......

Mike: You know Abby, I think you're going to be a pretty great teenager.

and without missing a beat....

Abby: I wouldn't count on that yet.

ahahahahha - such a funny kid.

my gosh they are cute

As soon as Abby got home tonight she started working on her homework, a rough copy of a poster she's going to draw. I'm not 100% sure what the project is about, but here's her rough copy... snapped with my phone.

It says - I give peace to the Earth. That's the Earth there with a lot of tiny people holding hands around it. How cute and heartwarming is that?

My kids are cute

And then Maya, since Abby was drawing she wanted to as well. She had no project to work on for school, but apparently she did have a bit of a spat with her little friend today at the sitter's. Picture = peace offering. It's a picture of Maya and her little friend, plus her attempt at spelling her friend's name... she got the first letter right, but it went all down hill from there. In the picture Maya is giving her friend some love.

So cute

I swear these kids kill me with the cute.

highlights

I had a warm bath this afternoon. I never have baths anymore. Same reason I don't like to nap.... seems like such a waste of time. Ironically I fell asleep while in the tub and had myself a little nap there. My back was not impressed.

The girls have been appearing at my side wearing halloween masks unexpectedly all weekend. Reduced me to giggles every time which would turn into a coughing jag. Still funny as hell though.

I kind of figure if you've got Vince Vaughn, Jason Bateman and Jon Favreau in the same movie that is never a waste of film.

I'm going to blame the cold and the advil, but I definitely watched some questionable tv this weekend. I'm looking at you Jersey Shore-a-thon. I also may have watched a Sister Wives marathon. Maybe.

I kinda wish I could just stay in bed tomorrow, but alas I must work. I'm thinking it might be a good idea to save the sick time in case one of the girls come down with this nasty cold. Fingers crossed they don't though.

sniffle sniffle

Well not surprisingly, it happened. Yep, Michael passed his head cold on to me. I'm pretty sure at some point in the past 48 hours my brain has leaked out my ear and been replaced with concrete. Oh my. I have lots of stuff to share with y'all, but I can't really put a coherent thought together right now. I'm dead tired and yet can't sleep, isn't that just a bitch? Plus I'm still working on that super big project for the fair. What with all the spreadsheets and figuring out money and points and stuff. Which is an awesome project when your brain hurts and your sinuses are full of rocks, just sayin'. I also owe about 15 people emails. I have 3 loads of laundry to fold and put away. Books to read with Abby (have I told you she's in an intense reading program at school now?). Homework to do with MyPie and the Abster. And the way I feel I have a real hard time imaging it all getting done.

Damn that man.

option c is the worst

I have

an adorable 8 year old who all but begged me to let her wash the dishes tonight, by hand. It was a project suggested by her French teacher, to do dishes without being asked. I wish all homework was that awesome!

a bear of a four year old, who did not handle school well at all today. She cried from the time she got home until the time I left for my meeting (and probably after, but I wasn't home for that part!), pausing only to throw her cup at her sister and then sniff at me that it was "just a toss and it didn't hurt her". I'd be willing to bet my next pay cheque that she was an absolute delight at school though. She just saves it up for Mama.

a husband with a head cold. God love him! Here's hoping he keeps that to himself!

what's cooking wednesday - maple pecan bread

Abby loves loves loves her pancakes. So when I stumbled across this recipe in one of my cookbooks I just knew I had to try it.

101210_2320[00].jpg

Maple Pecan Bread

1/4 cup shortening
3/4 cup maple syrup
2 eggs
2 cups whole wheat flour
1 tbsp baking powder
1/2 tsp salt
3/4 cup of milk
3/4 cup chopped pecans

Cream shortening and syrup together. Add eggs and mix well. Mix in the nuts and the dry ingredients. Pour into a greased 5x9 inch loaf pan or two 3x7 inch loaf pans and bake for 40 - 60 minutes at 350F

Recipe Notes: Well Abby just loved these. They have a very subtle pancake type flavour. I did make some changes. I used butter because I was out of shortening. Also after I had everything in the bowl I realized Michael had drained the milk jug, so I used water. Oh and I skipped the pecans because y'all know how I feel about nuts in the baking. And finally, I made muffins (baked them for 20 minutes at 350F). These will be on the lunch treat rotation.

Picture was taken with my phone, so I apologize for the quality, but it is late and the blogmother's sleep was all messed up last night. I is tired!

gobble gobble

A very happy Thanksgiving to all my Canadian bloggy peeps out there.

We had a very quiet and low key holiday weekend with only one turkey dinner. It was just what I needed after a month of busy-ness.

This Thanksgiving weekend I am so very thankful for...

My family. I really couldn't get through a day without them. Michael, my beautiful girls, my parents, brothers and sisters and the family I've adopted as my own along the way. Love each and every one of you.

This house that we made our home.

Cozy blankets and movie nights with my baby girls.

Crafting at the kitchen table.

Cupcakes and buttercream.

Gorgeous weather.

Afternoon naps - even if it did come back to bite me in the ass - and sleeping in.

Hope you all had a fantastic weekend.

10/10/10 in 10

Well it is October 10, 2010 or 10/10/10 and what better way to celebrate that then a picture an hour for ten hours? Love the idea and wish I could take credit for it, but I borrow all my best ideas from Andrea over at a peek inside the fishbowl. These pictures are being taken with my phone, so this project is not about photo quality, just a fun little peek into the life of a blogmother. Trust me it's all glamour folks!

sweetest kid evah

There hasn't been much of anything going on in regards to family fun nights in the past month or so. Now that our busiest month is behind us I thought it time to get things back on schedule, so even though Mike had a fair obligation... I know, right? Insert shocked face here.... the girls and I settled in to watch Night at the Museum 2, which I hadn't seen yet. Maya was out like a light 5 minutes in. This was her first three day school week and I think it's safe to say it did her right in.

So it was just Abbers and I. Now before I tell you the rest of the story I must warn you..... SPOILER ALERT........ Are we good? Okay.

So basically the story revolves around this tablet that has the ability to bring the historical figures in the museum to life after the sun goes down. So we're at the part where two characters are arguing over the tablet and Abby turns to me and says....

I wish I had that tablet because then I would make your Dad come back to life.

We have discussed my Dad, Abby and I. Not very often, but he comes up. I am just endlessly amazed by her empathy and compassion. She makes my heart sing and I am so thankful she's mine.

you capture - faces

Photobucket

You Capture this week was all about faces. Abby's riding lessons have started again.... aside... I wish you guys could see her on that horse. She's pretty good. It's impressive to watch... end aside... so I grabbed my camera and off to the stable I went looking for faces. And I found lots.

where do they get this stuff from

Tonight while we were tidying up I asked Abby if she would get a load of towels together and put them in the washing machine. She was thrilled to be given such a grown up job to do. So she gathered up all the dirty towels she could find pausing only to ask me if it was okay to put dishcloths in to because they're kinda like towels and when she was done she said.....

Okay these towels are ready to lock and load!

what's cooking wednesday

Well it's that time again. Time to let me know what you're cooking up in your kitchens! We've been so scattered here the past three weeks, it's been like a diner in here with people eating different things at different times. Hoping to get everyone back on track now that the craziness that was September is over.

knowing me, knowing you - october 2010

Why yes I did totally miss last month's Knowing Me, Knowing You. September was a whirlwind, it sure was. I had a blast, but I'm kinda glad it's behind us as well.

So without further ado let's dive right into everyone's favourite little interview project.....

1. Started your Christmas shopping yet?

Why yes, yes I have. I've actually made a serious little dent in it already. I've got a couple little things tucked away for Abby. Papa and Grandma Linda are pretty much done and I've got great ideas for the rest of the folks on my list. Last year I had very little Christmas spirit... I faked it pretty good, but last year was a definite struggle. I'm thrilled to have my Christmas-ness back.

2. Fall is here, what's your favourite cold weather comfort food?

Pasta. Any kind - meat sauce, meatballs, alfredo... whatever. I love it all.

3. Are you watching any new shows?

Heck I've barely had time to watch any of my old favourites, but I did stumble upon Raising Hope and I loved it right away. It's quirky and I love me some quirky.

4. Have you read Pillars of the Earth by Ken Follet?

Why yes I have... funny you should ask. Loved it. Who else has read it so we can discuss how awesome it was? Anybody watch the mini-series? Did it translate to TV well?

5. Is the top of your desk cluttered or clear?

Cluttered. I try to keep it clear, but it's a battle I have a hard time winning. Maybe one day.

So now the rules, they're pretty simple. Post your answers to these questions on your own blog in the next few days. Remember to link back here in your post and sign the Mr. Linky too, so we can all see what you have to say. Please make sure you link to your actual KMKY post and not your blog's front page. Any front page links will be deleted. And most importantly, have fun! Have suggestions for next months questions? Leave me a comment or send me an email and let me know.

you capture - togetherness

This week's You Capture prompt was togetherness and it was just the prompt to get me back in the blogging and photog taking saddle. Friday afternoon we attended a family wedding. What a perfect fit.

Photobucket

I'm going to try and not get too sappy on you guys here, but I can't make you any promises. The bride, Kate is the daughter of Mike's cousin Kim. For too few years they lived right around the corner from us and their house was a regular drop in place for Mike and I in the days before we had kids and after. Abby spent many an evening as a swaddled pink bundle asleep between Kim and I on their rec room couch. I kind of fit right in between Kim and Kate. Only about a decade separated Kim's age from mine and mine from Kate's. As much as I adore Uncle Dave having a sister was always on my wishlist. I've collected a few sisters of my heart over the years and I think it would be safe to say I viewed my relationships with Kim and Kate in a similar light. I feel like they gave me a taste of what it was like to be a big sister and also to have a big sister. Eventually Kate grew up and moved way across the country and Kim and her husband packed up the rest of the family and moved them a couple of towns over. I can't even begin to tell you how much I miss all of them.

We got to come back together this weekend, to share in Kate's special day. Her husband, I could tell right away, is a perfect fit for her. She was a beautiful bride and I was so very touched that she asked if MyPie could be her flower girl. It's been a weekend of hugs, lots of laughs and some happy tears and I wish the happy couple all the very best in the world.
